OwnerShips was set up in 1990 by a team of waterways enthusiasts, and has now become the largest organisation of its kind in Europe.

The organisation is not commercially orientated, and does not employ salesmen. Rather, it is run more along the lines of a private boaters’ club, where all the benefits accrue to its members. Any residual funds generated by OwnerShips are donated to worthy causes on the inland waterways.

What we do is to provide a way of enjoying luxury boating holidays at considerably less than the cost of using hire craft, by means of an arrangement known as Private Shared Ownership.

As a member of the scheme, you become a private boat owner for as long or as short a time as you like, where "shares" in a particular boat may be purchased or sold at any time.

Your boat is your own, along with other like minded boating enthusiasts, where OwnerShips represents your interests in taking care of its maintenance and upkeep, its security when not in use, handling all of the finances, and also providing immediate advice or assistance if required (by mobile telephone) whilst you are afloat. You choose where your boat is moored from year to year, and how often and when you use it, where special arrangements are made for those who are tied to school holidays.

The result is a system of enjoying comfortable and luxurious holidays afloat at minimal cost. Typically, a week on a private narrow boat or Dutch barge will cost around £300.00 (i.e. around £50.00 per person).
